How Do Toasters Work?

Toasters use infrared radiation to heat bread slices or whatever is placed in the toaster. A spring-loaded tray pops the toast out when the timer turns the toaster off after the required time.

Toasting bread has been done for thousands of years, but the history of toasters started in 1905, when Albert Marsh discovered that Nichrome could reach high temperatures without being damaged or starting a fire. Shortly afterwards, George Schneider took out a patent for the first electric toaster.

Standard 2-slice toaster. This is the type of toaster that has been around for years. It contains a timer and pop-up function and slots for two slices of bread.
